Lineup shift pays off for Helias soccer in 4-3 win over Moberly

There were more important things than the score Tuesday night for the Helias Crusaders.

Matthew Schulte's goal in the final minute of the first half gave Helias a 2-1 lead at intermission against the Moberly Spartans at the 179 Soccer Park.

But when the Crusaders came out on the field to start the final 40 minutes, there were wholesale lineup changes.

"We've had kind of an issue with giving 100 percent all the time," Helias coach Michael Metzger said. "So we had to make some changes and the kids we brought in played very well. It really was the best soccer we played all night."

The Spartans were able to tie the game early in the half, but Braden Remmert scored two goals in a little more than a minute late in the half as the Crusaders posted a 4-3 victory.

"I think in the end, he wanted to win the game," Metzger said. "We all did, we all played hard in the end and fortunately we got it."

Remmert gave Helias the lead back with just under 14 minutes remaining when he converted on a penalty kick after Moberly was called for a hand ball.

"I have a couple of spots that I like and I just pick one out and hit it," Remmert said.

The lead was short-lived as Moberly tied it with a penalty kick of its own on the ensuing possession. Helias keeper Sam Verry stopped the initial shot by Connor Armstrong before the Moberly senior scored on the rebound.

"It was a great play to score the goal, it was an unlucky finish for us," Metzger said.

Remmert then got the game-winner with 12:39 remaining.

"We're going through some growing pains, we've had some ups and downs, but if we keep doing what we're doing, we're going to be very good by the end of the season," Remmert said.

Nick Brandt scored to give the Crusaders the lead less than two minutes into the game. The Spartans (0-3) then tied it about two minutes later.

Schulte's goal then gave Helias a 2-1 lead at the half before the changes came at intermission.

Helias (4-2) is back in action Thursday at Washington.

In Tuesday night's JV game, Helias (3-2) rolled to a 12-0 victory. Carson Mudd had four goals to lead the Crusaders, while Jacob Frank totaled a team-high three assists. Verry was in goal in the shutout.
