Kewpies edge Jays in PKs

It's something that was still on the to-do list.

The Jefferson City Jays and Hickman Kewpies were tied at 1 after regulation Tuesday night at the 179 Soccer Park. They were still tied after the two 10-minute overtime periods, meaning the contest was going to be decided in penalty kicks.

"We haven't practiced those yet," Jays coach Eddie Horn after Jefferson City fell to Hickman 2-1. "But it's still early."

Hickman outscored Jefferson City 3-2 in the five rounds of PKs. Jefferson City shot first and Jordan Carron got the Jays on the board. Hickman scored on its first two tries to take a 2-1 lead. That's where it stood until Round 5, when goalie Zach Brooks scored for the Jays to tie it at 2.

Hickman then got the game-winner from Ryan Fox.

"We don't like losing, but we were pretty solid tonight when you look at the big picture," Horn said.

The Jays had not played since opening the season Aug. 22 with a 2-0 loss at C.B.C. Horn said Jefferson City was treating Tuesday night's game as its true opener.

"We defended the whole time against C.B.C., that really didn't give us a chance to see where we are," Horn said. "We had to play a lot of defense to keep that one close."

Tuesday night, it was an opportunity to see how the team would put into action what it has been working on practice.

"We wanted to play free and easy and see what we looked like," Horn said. "And the first 10 minutes, it looked like it was our first game."

Hickman (4-0) got on the board 12 minutes into the game on a goal by Matias Aura.

The Jays got the equalizer with just under seven minutes left in the first half when Romando Thomas lined home a shot, assisted by Erick Ortiz.

And the last one until penalty kicks. The second half saw a lot of back and forth action, as did both of the overtimes.

"We're still searching for our identity," Horn said, noting the team needs to improve its ball speed on offense. "I think we might be a little more blue-collar than we've been in the past, we tackled a little bit better."

Jefferson City (0-2) is back in action Thursday at Quincy (Ill.) Notre Dame before hosting St. Louis University High in a varsity-only contest at 6 p.m. Friday.
