Driver cited in Monday's Eldon bus crash

The Missouri Highway Patrol cited the driver of a Ford truck that ran into a school bus in Eldon Monday afternoon for "careless and imprudent driving involving a crash," Cpl. Scott White said Tuesday.

The patrol's report said the accident happened at 3:20 p.m. Monday, at the intersection of East Fourth and Short streets - about a block from Business 54 - when the 2007 Bluebird school bus was stopped and "preparing to discharge passengers."

Investigators said Arthur D. Wayland, 53, Olean, driving a 2008 Ford pickup, failed to stop for the stopped bus, and struck it from behind.

Wayland received moderate injuries and was treated at the scene.

The Miller County Ambulance service carried five students - two girls, 12 and 14, and three boys, 5, 11 and 14 - to Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach, where all were treated for minor injuries.

White said Tuesday, "Alcohol or drug impairment were not a factor in this crash."

Eldon R-1 School District officials said Monday the bus driver - identified by the patrol as Mark D. Beauchamp, 33, Eldon - followed all safety procedures.

White, information officer for the Patrol's Troop F region, that includes Miller County, said Wayland "was assigned a future court date in Miller County."
