Machens Automotive wins charity chili cookoff

Machens Automotive Group topped nine teams in Wednesday's sixth annual Missouri Valley Big Brothers Big Sisters chili cookoff, raising $2,700 for the charity group.

Big Brothers Big Sisters raised about $2,700, which will be used to support the costs of enrolling, screening and matching children in the program.

The People's Choice Winners were: Machens, first place; Jefferson Bank, second place; and Prison Brews, third place.

The Celebrity Choice Winner was a tie between Bandana's and UMB Bank.

The Machens team made a Texas-style red chili with both ground chuck and roast chuck that was between mild and hot, team member Tom McCormick said. "It's warm enough to keep you warm on a cold night," he said.

Machens chili also featured homemade chips and queso dip.

McCormick said his team consisted of him, his wife, Elisabeth, and Derick and Sarah Streeter, also Machens employees.

He said his wife, who was born and raised in Texas, came up with the recipe. She has worked in the restaurant industry much of her life, and currently works at Skyline Cafe in Ashland.
