BizBeat: Slackers moving to Capital Mall

Slackers entertainment store will relocate to its third location in its 13 years in Jefferson City next month.

The new Slackers store will be located in the Dillard's wing of Capital Mall, next to Payless ShoeSource.

The store, which sells music, movies, video games, comics and memorabilia, has been located in the plaza at 744 W. Stadium Blvd. since it moved from Missouri Boulevard three years ago.

"We thought being in front of Walmart would be a strong opportunity, but it hasn't fully met our expectation," said owner Kurt Jellenik. "We're in several malls in St. Louis - Chesterfield, Mid Rivers, South County and the St. Louis Outlet Mall - and they've been a nice complement to our other strip center stores. So we thought it would be a good opportunity to try to duplicate that success."

Slackers operates Mid-Missouri retail locations in Jefferson City and Columbia, as well as several in the St. Louis area in both Missouri and Illinois. The store has had a presence in Jefferson City for 13 years.

The move also will allow the local Slackers store to continue expanding what it offers in terms of pop-culture memorabilia like action figures and posters.

"We're kind of a pop-culture superstore now in addition to our traditional music, movies and games," Jellenik said. "We're big into comic books now and a lot of accessory items - things that you can't digitally download."

He anticipates it will take about a month to prepare the store for relocation, with a mid-November move-in. At that time the store likely will be closed for about two days.
