Helias girls golf third after first day at state tourney

JOPLIN - The Helias Lady Crusaders sit in third place after Monday's opening round of the Class 1 state golf tournament at Twin Oaks Country Club.

Helias carded a 363 in the nine-team tournament.

Lauren Plunkett paced Helias with an 84. She is in a five-way tie for ninth in the individual standings.

Luci Francka is tied for 22nd after carding an 89, while Alex Nelson is tied for 34th with a 93. Maggie Kehoe shot a 97 and is tied for 47th, while Ashten Lorts totaled a 101 and is tied for 60th.

Defending team champion MICDS is in first with a 338, three shots better than Pembroke Hill, St. Dominic is fourth at 366.

India Gaume of Pembroke Hill tops the individual standings with a 72, one shot better than Lyndsey Standage of Logan-Rogersville.

The tournament will conclude today.

Sophie Brant of California is 14th after shooting an 85 on Monday

Mikala Jungmeyer of Russellville is in a three-way tie for 17th after Monday's round with an 87. Madison Oliver of Russellville is 59th after shooting a 100.

Breanna Kempker of Eugene is tied for 67th after an opening-round 104, while Alexandra Morningstar of New Bloomfield is 78th after carding a 111.

Lady Jays duo at state

SPRINGFIELD - Jefferson City teammates Blair Michael and Ellie Severance opened play Monday in the Class 2 state tournament at Rivercut Golf Course.

Michael is in a five-way tie for 38th after shooting an 86. Severance is 73rd after totaling a 94.

Warrensburg leads the eight-team field with a 331. Marquette is second at 336, while St. Joseph's Academy is third at 339.

Taylor BeDell of Warrensburg shot a 71 on Monday to lead the Class 2 individual standings.
