Romantic musical has score to fall in love with

The romantic musical "The Last Five Years," with score by Jason Robert Brown, is the latest production by Capital City Players.

This is based on a true story of the five-year relationship between Brown and his wife.

In the play, his character is a rising novelist and his wife is a struggling actress.

It shows the rise and fall of relationships - how people meet, fall in love and fall out of love.

It is a strong musical score and requires two very musically-strong actors.

According to Rob Crouse, president of Capital City Players, Brandon Sankpill, who plays Jamie, and Sarah Dent, who plays Cathy, fit this bill.

"This is a dream role for me," Dent said. "The music is gorgeous and I don't have to say lines. I am basically singing all of the time."

Audiences may remember Dent played Patsy Cline in a Capital City Players production and Sankpill from "Les Miserables" and "Into the Woods."

"I have been in love with this show for a long time. The chance to play the character and make him come to life is wonderful," Sankpill said.

The set is another large one and was built by Sankpills' uncle Nate Grey and his brother Nick Sankpill.

According to Crouse the audience will be impressed with the picture it paints.

Director Kathleen Lavery was not familiar with the show until chosen to direct.

"I had not heard much about the show until I was given the chance to direct. I have now fallen in love with the show," Lavery said.

Musical director Laura Kitchel is using a small combo to provide music for the show. She taught music in the public school system and has appeared on stage for Capital City Players.

"This is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Audiences should truly enjoy this music. Brown is a modern day Sondheim," Lavery said.

Aside from the musical itself there are a few changes in this production audiences should be aware of. There will be no buffet on Oct. 8 or Oct. 11. All other performances will have buffets.

Also on opening night there will be a cash bar by Shrunken Head Tropical Lounge. After the show some of the Capital City Players will perform a short cabaret program.

Crouse said audiences will be surprised to see some changes in the auditorium décor.

Crews have been working to remodel the bathrooms and make changes in the front entrance area and dining area.

Eventually a wooden floor will be laid down in the dining area.

"This is all a work in progress. I am not sure how much will be finished for this performance," Crouse said.
