Friday Night Recap: Ramsey scores first TD as pass game settles in for Jays

In a Homecoming romping, the Jefferson City Jays faithful may have wondered who caught Gunnar See's first touchdown pass of the evening.

It even took the public address announcer a minute or two to find out who came down with the grab. It wasn't one of See's normal targets.

After the Jays had mobbed the pass-catcher, it became clear who had reeled in the 8-yard touchdown toss. It was tight end Floyd Ramsey.

Ramsey, a senior, made his first varsity start per first-team tight end Allan Roettgen's request. Ramsey played a total of three snaps with the 1s. He made the most of it, coming down with one catch, an 8-yard touchdown grab at 6:57 in the first quarter.

"Allan Roettgen came up to me earlier this week," LePage said, "and said "Floyd's never started a game as a tight end. Can he start in my spot?' That kind of tells what kind of team we have."

The touchdown wasn't just his first varsity touchdown.

"First touchdown in my whole life," Ramsey said. "(Usually I) either I drop a ball, it gets called back or something happens. That meant a lot to me and I'll never be able to repay (Roettgen). ... It shows how much we really care about each other. It's more than just playing games, it's kind of like a family here. That's how we treat each other."

Ramsey has been in the program all four years of high school.

"He's always been there for me," said Roettgen, a junior. "He's always talked to me, I mean, I love him like my brother. He's a senior, he's never started before, never scored a touchdown before. I just wanted him to get a chance to do it and see what it feels like."

Ramsey added his only thought was "I better catch it." After he did indeed make the grab, teammates swarmed him with congratulations.

"It was exciting. I didn't think everybody was going to come to me like that," he said. "It really surprised me, but I think it shows how close we are."

See is starting to find a groove as the Jays' starting quarterback.

See has led the Jays to a 6-1 record after last night's 56-6 Homecoming win over Confluence Prep. The lone loss under the junior's watch was a 49-14 defeat at Christian Brothers (7-0) in Week 2.

Since then, See has guided a team that's averaging 46 points a game and has won five straight games.

In his most recent win, See was 11-of-13 for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

See has thrown 14 touchdown passes and four interceptions on the season. He averages 186 passing yards a game, while completing 63 percent of his passes.

"I feel good with where I'm at in running the offense," See said. "We're in a good spot with a lot of momentum coming off five wins in a row."

He hasn't had a shortage of options either. See's most recent leading receiver was Roettgen, who had four catches for 101 yards and a 59-yard touchdown.

See has made four different Jays' receivers a leading receiver in a game. Junior Adam Huff has owned the title three times, senior Daniel Ellinger twice, senior Denzel Wilson once and Roettgen was Friday's leading catcher.

"We have a lot of guys that can step up any night, honestly," See said. "Whenever they get their opportunity they take advantage, which has helped us out a lot."

Jefferson City head coach Ted LePage agreed with his signal-caller.

"Two weeks ago it was Daniel, last week it was Huff, this week it was Allan, Gourley did a good job and (J.T.) Bohlken, too," LePage said. "The opportunities that are there when you have four good receivers, we're going to find somebody for a mismatch."

Ellinger - who was held out of Friday's game with a potential concussion - and Huff have been See's favorite targets. Ellinger has hauled in 18 catches for 384 yards and three touchdowns, while Huff poses as the deep threat with six touchdowns and 19 catches for 378 yards. Senior wide receiver Jacob Gourley has contributed eight catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.

Roettgen has complemented the receivers with 16 grabs, 276 yards and three touchdowns.

"I think the passing game is going pretty well," Roettgen said. "I'm trying my hardest to not let just one person tackle me. I'm just trying to get as many yards as I can after the catch. And I'm just playing my heart out for the seniors."

The Jays held at 14-6 advantage before they reeled off 21 straight second-quarter points.

There were two miscues on offense - a See interception that led to the Titans lone six points in the second quarter and a Rashaun Woods lost fumble early in the third quarter.

"It was very disappointing," LePage said. "That's been our mojo the last couple years. We just don't turn the ball over."

The defense held the Titans to 100 yards of offense and created two turnovers. Junior Isaac Mooreland caught his second interception on the season.

"Defensively I thought we swarmed the ball outstanding," LePage said. "We gave up two big plays. He made some things happen for them, and that's what good players do."

Woods had two touchdowns on the game and took over as the running back. Senior Denzel Wilson played just the first half in the rout. He had 68 rushing yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.

"That was good for Rashaun. The fumble happened and then he turned around and had some very good runs," LePage said.

A running clock killed time once it hit the nine-minute mark in the third quarter, while the lighter-used Jays got their turns.

"I don't like to use the term resting, I like to say that we get to watch other players on film to watch them," LePage said. "Right now we've had a couple injuries thrusted upon us. This is the opportunity in a game like this where we get to see guys on film. In the third quarter, we're already seeing two's and three's on film. We may see some guys on film and all of a sudden we may say "hey, that guy can help us.' Especially going into these last two games we're going to need a couple guys step up and help."

On the first play of the fourth quarter, junior Anthony Johnson jumped on a fumble for the Jays' second takeaway.

Sophomore quarterback Michael Ellinger replaced See. On the drive, junior running back Carson Ridgeway rushed 11 yards on four carries and Damarion Winston added a 2-yard run before Ellinger scrambled to his left and scored on an 8-yard run with 7:58 remaining in the game.

Jefferson City turns its attention to Battle (7-0), who is coming off a 31-18 win at Lee's Summit North. The following week against Rockhurst will wrap up the regular season.

"They're huge. This determines where we are," Roettgen said. "This separates the men from the boys. These games are huge. We've treated these past few games just as intense as (the last two) will be. I think we're prepared for them if we put in a good week of practice and come out with a W."
