ST. LOUIS (AP) - Missouri's largest electric company has announced a $2.5 million initiative that will focus on education, economic development and energy assistance in St. Louis and North St. Louis County.
Ameren Corp. announced the program on Saturday, saying it aligns with a number of priorities identified by the Ferguson Commission. The task force was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon in November to examine race relations, failing schools and other issues in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer.
Ameren's contribution will come over a number of years, with $1 million targeted for education, $500,000 for economic development and $1 million for energy assistance.
The St. Louis-based utility serves about 1.2 million electric customers, mostly in the St. Louis region or eastern and central Missouri.
