Jefferson City man gets nine years in chase case

A Jefferson City man was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to charges in connection with a pursuit with authorities in southern Cole County in September.

Brandon Burkhart, 18, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, second-degree assault and resisting arrest.

He was given credit for time already served.

Missouri Highway Patrol reports show Burkhart was on Brown Road at Hickory Hill Road. He was being pursued by authorities and entered the intersection going too fast, struck an embankment and crashed.

A Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement shows a deputy tried to stop Burkhart at Route B and Tanner Bridge Road for multiple lane violations.

Burkhart failed to stop, and the pursuit began.

During the pursuit, Burkhart crossed the center line and drove in the wrong lane on many occasions.

The vehicle was spike-stripped at Tanner Bridge Road and Route E, but Burkhart kept going.

He exited Route E and went the wrong way on U.S. 54, traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes.

Burkhart got onto Fall Hill Road and eventually crashed. During a search of the vehicle, deputies found individually wrapped bags of what was believed to be marijuana.

When questioned by authorities, Burkhart said he ran because he had an active warrant for his arrest. He also admitted to drinking beer, smoking marijuana, and taking Xanax and Vicodin prior to driving.
