Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra begins concert season

The Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra will perform its first symphony concert of the year at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchell Auditorium on the Lincoln University campus.

This concert will feature soloist Chloe Trevor performing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major. Other selections include Debussy's Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.

The orchestra has been performing for more than 50 years with a twofold mission. The first objective is to provide the Mid-Missouri community with symphonic concerts of classical music literature from many cultures. The second objective is to provide symphonic performance opportunities for middle school through high school age string students. The symphony is like a one-room schoolhouse with approximately two-thirds of the musicians being adults and the remaining one-third being students.

"These masterpieces span from 1878 to 1910," said director Patrick Clark. "During these years, music makes a drastic change from late romanticism to modernism. All three are considered challenging and it is ambitious to put all three into one concert, especially for our students who range in ages from 13 through 18. They comprise a large part of our string section."

Tickets to the concert are $15 for adults and $5 for students. If you attended Project Trio on Sept. 24 and bring in your ticket stub from that performance, you get full credit towards a season ticket.

Tickets for individual symphony performances and season tickets may be purchased at the door on the evening of a concert or they may be purchased online at jcsymphony.org.
