Our Opinion: Uniting tradition and imagination to meet goal

News Tribune editorial

A successful blend of tradition and imagination helped the United Way of Central Missouri exceed the goal of this year's fundraising campaign.

The projected tally of $1,809,227 surpassed the $1.8 million goal, which was characterized as "ambitious" by area United Way President Ann Bax.

Community response historically has been generous, in part because residents recognize the campaign is a needs-based, volunteer-driven effort.

The addition this year of two new members agencies - Capital City Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association - increased in the number of United Way partner agencies and programs, which in turn triggered increased need and a higher goal.

"I was nervous," Bax confessed at Thursday's celebration. "We were all nervous, but we knew it (the expanded partnership) was the right thing. So, that empowers you to go out and make it happen."

To make it happen, United Way volunteers were not inclined to rest on the laurels of past successes. Instead, they matched new partnerships with increased participation and attained an ambitious goal using enhanced activities.

This year's campaign leadership team increased by 13 volunteers, for a total of 50 members, including veteran campaigners and newcomers.

The increased participation allowed volunteers to bring the United Way message into more workplaces during the campaign.

In addition, a range of activities and events - at both workplace and community levels - raised awareness and visibility for the United Way effort.

Centered on a reality television theme, activities included "Mid-Missouri's Got Talent" and "Rock, Paper, Scissors" challenges based on a motif from "Survivor."

Barb Prasad, a campaign co-chair, said she was "inspired" by the community's generosity; Bax called the campaign effort "rewarding."

We commend the both the United Way campaign volunteers and the contributors from the community who pushed the total beyond the goal.

Each one of you has made a difference in someone's life by extending the services, resources and programs provided by United Way partners.
