Root Cellar, a grocery store that sells primarily locally-grown and produced as well as organic foods, opened Wednesday in downtown Jefferson City.
The store, located at 306 E. High St., is Root Cellar's second location; its Columbia store has operated since 2001.
Jefferson City's Root Cellar currently offers a selection of produce like potatoes, onions, zucchini, squash and more, as well as dry goods - including gluten-free products - and refrigerated and frozen foods that are produced locally.
"And, of course, we'll get more and more produce as the season goes on," said Chelsea Davis, who owns Root Cellar with her husband, Jake Davis.
The store also has a small selection of naturally-made home supplies including cleaning products and paper goods.
The owners plan to add a small beer and wine section as well as more bulk options for dry goods soon, Davis said. They have also incorporated a small seating area so they can begin serving lunch when the kitchen is ready in a few weeks.
Root Cellar's weekly seasonal food subscription program has already started, and participants pick up their boxes from the High Street store. Options include the "Bounty Box," which includes eight to 12 fresh, local produce items; the "Barnyard Box," which includes a half-gallon of local milk, a dozen farm-fresh eggs, two meat products and a handcrafted dairy item; and the "Ploughman's Box," which includes four to six staple produce items, one meat item and an artisan food item.
