Motorcyclists to gather around US for Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day is one of the biggest holidays on the calendars of motorcycle riders. This year, just about a week after nine people were killed and more were wounded in a shootout involving what authorities say were outlaw motorcycle gangs during a gathering in Waco, Texas, rallies around the country will attract hundreds of thousands of everyday motorcycle enthusiasts. These are some of the larger motorcycle rallies in the United States:

ATLANTIC BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA

The Atlantic Beach Bikefest is expected to attract an estimated 400,000 bikers in the latest installment of a weekend rally that dates back to 1980.

RED RIVER, NEW MEXICO

About 20,000 motorcyclists are expected to attend the annual Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally, the latest in a gathering that has been held for more than 30 years. Activities include a blood drive, burlesque show, live music and a Memorial Day ceremony Monday.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Organizers say the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally, an annual tribute to military veterans and in particular members of the armed forces who are still missing in action, attracts up to 900,000 bikers and spectators. On Sunday, Rolling Thunder XXV11 First Amendment Demonstration Run will begin at the North Pentagon parking lot and run through the Mall area.

BUCKHORN, MISSOURI

The 27th edition of the Mid-America Freedom Rally in Buckhorn, Missouri, runs from Friday until Monday morning, and features a bike show, poker runs, Miss Freedom Rally and other events.
