Game day at the Hackett house in Russellville is family day, and Mom Shannon is right in the mix, wearing orange and blue, eating snacks and cheering on the Denver Broncos.

This fall, however, Shannon may need a new team jersey to accommodate the baby bump of baby number three. When he arrives in September, he already has orange and blue outfits waiting.

Being a mom is something she always saw herself doing. Four years after she and Zach married, they decided it was time.

However, getting pregnant was more exhausting than they had anticipated, resulting in more than a year of testing and fertility drugs before Jackson came along 10 years ago. Allison, 6, also was a fertility-aided baby. So the couple thought their family-building was over.

The little boy due in September not only was a surprise, but they consider him a miracle.

"I wouldn't change a thing," Shannon said. "Being a mother is the coolest experience in the world - to hear their first words and see their first steps."

Transplanted from Colorado four years ago, the Hacketts have made Russellville their home. And their lives revolve around their children.

That's why Shannon has been active in the PTO, taking on the presidency for the upcoming school year, and the Russellville Pool Board. She's also coached ball teams, but has left that to Dad for this season.

"I always knew I wanted to be there for my kids," Shannon said.

One way she's done that is by making friends with the parents of her children's friends and being involved with the organizations where her children are active.

That includes the new parent group raising funds for an eventual high school football team. Zach was elected president, but that means Shannon was, too, as she will be right alongside helping.

"She'll do whatever it takes for her kids to be successful, happy and growing as children into adults," Zach said of Shannon.

It's at home where the Hackett family spends most of its time.

Because both Shannon and Zach were the oldest of their siblings, they had a unique perspective on how they wanted to treat Jackson, they agreed. Part of that means he's not left responsible for his younger sister.

"We expect them to behave and have good manners, but we did not want to add extra pressure on him," Zach said.

Instead of date nights as a couple, they have family date nights.

"We don't want to leave our kids with a babysitter," Shannon said. "We've always wanted to be a family, so we do family things."

Even when Zach ran for mayor, the entire family was involved making and installing signs.

"If we decided to do something, we do it together," she said.

The Golden Rule is their parenting standard.

"We talk to them like they're people and expect to communicate the best we can," she said. "We want them to grow and explore and have their own ideas but also to feel comfortable coming to talk to us."

The Hackett home has established routines, like bedtime snuggles and one-on-one visits.

They also have traditions. In addition to the football games with all four of them gathered on the oversized sofa, their family vacation is going to the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Broncos game.

Shannon and Allison enjoy spa days and cooking. And Mom shares an enthusiasm for superhero movies with Jackson.

For now, the family also makes eating supper together a priority. With gymnastics and sports teams, their evenings can become hectic. But Shannon prepares meals ahead of time to create at least a few moments for the family to sit down together, she said.

"It may be tougher to do with a new one and as they get older, going in different directions," she said.

"I think we're a good team."
