Games played on May 5, 2015

TORONTO (AP) - Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer, Michael Pineda matched his career high with eight shutout innings and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits, stole two bases and scored twice as the AL East leaders improved to 11-4 away from home, the best road record in the league. Alex Rodriguez hit an early two-run double.

New York has gone 14-4 since a 3-6 start.

Pineda (4-0) allowed five hits and struck out six to win his fourth straight road start, a streak that began in Boston last September. The right-hander has road wins over all four division opponents in that span.

Andrew Miller got one out for his 11th save, stranding runners at first and second.

Teixeira's 373rd home run tied teammate Carlos Beltran for fourth-most by a switch-hitter.

Marco Estrada (1-1) yielded five runs, four earned, over 4 2-3 innings in his first start of the season.

RED SOX 2, RAYS 0

BOSTON (AP) - Mookie Betts homered to lead off the sixth inning - the first hit off Rays starter Drew Smyly - and added another in the eighth to lead Boston over Tampa Bay.

On the night the Red Sox honored their 1975 AL championship team, Betts hit two solo shots over the Green Monster that Carlton Fisk cleared in the World Series 40 years ago. It was Betts' first career multihomer game.

The Red Sox had lost four straight and nine of 12 to fall into last place in the AL East.

Rick Porcello (3-2) pitched seven innings and scattered eight hits. Koji Uehara earned his fifth save.

Smyly (0-1) left trailing 1-0 despite allowing only two hits.

METS 3, ORIOLES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Bartolo Colon became the first pitcher in at least 100 years to beat the same opponent with seven different teams, stopping Baltimore once again and leading the New York Mets past the Orioles.

Colon (5-1) took a shutout into the eighth inning before Manny Machado hit a solo home run. The Mets won after getting blanked 1-0 in their previous two games.

New York ended its scoreless streak at 21 innings when Daniel Murphy hit an RBI single in a three-run fourth, and won for just the second time in seven games. Kevin Plawecki had a two-run double off Bud Norris (1-3).

Baltimore began its weeklong visit to Citi Field and Yankee Stadium with its second loss in seven games. The Orioles have lost seven in a row to the Mets overall.

Three weeks shy of his 42nd birthday, Colon struck out nine and walked none in 7 2-3 innings. Jeurys Familia closed for his major league-leading 11th save in as many chances, giving up Chris Davis' sixth homer on his first pitch.

Colon improved to 13-8 vs. the Orioles. He first beat them in 1999.

REDS 7, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Marlon Byrd homered and drove in four runs, Todd Frazier belted his National League-leading ninth home run and Cincinnati defeated Pittsburgh.

Byrd hit a two-run shot in the third inning off Jeff Locke (2-2) and added two-run double in the ninth. Frazier finished 2 for 5 for the Reds, unbeaten against the Pirates this season.

Cincinnati rookie Michael Lorenzen (1-1) worked six-plus innings for his first major league victory. He gave up three hits, including Starling Marte's homer.

The Pirates have lost four straight and six of seven.

BRAVES 9, PHILLIES 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Shelby Miller threw his third career shutout, Freddie Freeman and Kelly Johnson homered to spoil Chad Billingsley's first start in more than two years, and Atlanta routed Philadelphia.

Miller (4-1) allowed three hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his six starts.

Billingsley (0-1) gave up six runs, five earned, in five innings. The right-hander fought back from two major operations on his pitching arm to make his first start since April 15, 2013, for the Dodgers against San Diego.

Freeman had three hits, including a two-run homer. Johnson, who drove in four runs, hit a three-run shot.

RANGERS 7, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Kyle Blanks had three hits, including a homer, and Carlos Peguero added a two-run shot to back a solid start by Wandy Rodriguez as Texas beat Houston to win consecutive games for the first time this season.

The Rangers also won their first series of the year after a victory Monday night that snapped Houston's 10-game winning streak. They entered as the only team in the majors not to have won a series or two games in a row.

In his third start, Rodriguez (1-1) allowed three hits and one run in a season-high eight innings against his former team to get his first win since May 26, 2013, with the Pirates.

Texas tagged Scott Feldman for four runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Prince Fielder and Peguero's first home run of the season. Feldman (2-3) allowed nine hits and six runs in a season-low three innings.

MARLINS 2, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Mat Latos and four relievers combined on a three-hitter, and Miami beat Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals.

Strasburg (2-3) left for a pinch hitter in the third inning after allowing two runs and throwing 64 pitches. His departure might have been due to an injury, because one inning earlier the right-hander grimaced after throwing a pitch and was visited by the team trainer, pitching coach Steve McCatty and manager Matt Williams.

Strasburg stayed in the game, but not for long. He was scheduled to lead off the third and put on a batting helmet, but was told to take a seat in the dugout.

Strasburg gave up four hits, walked two and hit a batter with a pitch in his shortest outing since a two-inning stint against Miami on Aug. 28, 2013.

Latos (1-3) allowed one run and two hits over 6 1-3 innings to earn his first win with Miami.

ROYALS 5, INDIANS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer, Jason Vargas shut down the Indians for the second straight start, and Kansas City went on to beat Cleveland.

Hosmer also had an RBI triple and Alex Gordon drove in a run for the Royals, who bounced back nicely after losing two straight to Detroit last weekend.

Vargas (3-1) allowed two hits, one a two-run homer by Michael Brantley, over six stingy innings.

Kelvin Herrera gave up a home run to Lonnie Chisenhall in the eighth, ending his streak of 105 1-3 innings without allowing one. Wade Davis earned his sixth save.

Danny Salazar (3-1) allowed four runs in seven innings, striking out nine.

WHITE SOX 5, TIGERS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jeff Samardzija pitched seven effective innings, and Chicago snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory over Detroit.

Back at home after a strange road trip, the White Sox chased Shane Greene (3-2) in the third inning of their first win in nine days. Two of their three games in Baltimore were postponed due to rioting near Camden Yards, and they were swept in a four-game series at Minnesota.

Samardzija (2-2) allowed a run in each of the first two innings, and then pitched four-hit ball for the rest of his outing. David Robertson closed for his fourth save

Alex Avila homered for Detroit.

GIANTS 6, PADRES 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ryan Vogelsong pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Joe Panik homered and San Francisco won its fifth consecutive game by beating San Diego.

The Giants threw their third shutout in a row and second against the Padres, who came to town after scoring 26 runs in a three-game sweep of Colorado last weekend. San Diego has gone 20 innings without scoring.

Brandon Crawford had three hits and an RBI for the Giants, who won their eighth straight at home and are a game over .500 (14-13) for the first time since April 10, the beginning of an eight-game losing streak.

Vogelsong (1-2) struck out four in his longest outing of the season. George Kontos and Yusmeiro Petit completed the four-hitter.

Andrew Cashner (1-5) remained winless in eight games, four starts, in San Francisco.

ANGELS 5, MARINERS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Carlos Perez capped his rousing major league debut with a game-ending homer in the ninth inning, and Los Angeles snapped its four-game skid with a victory over Seattle.

Erick Aybar and Johnny Giavotella delivered RBI singles off Danny Farquhar to tie it in the eighth for the Angels, who had blown a one-run lead in the top of the inning.

Perez, a 24-year-old catcher from Venezuela, singled in his first career at-bat. He swung at the first pitch in the ninth from Dominic Leone (0-3) and became the first player to hit a walk-off homer in his debut since Miguel Cabrera did it for the Marlins on June 20, 2003.

Albert Pujols hit his 525th career homer for the Angels, who got seven innings of five-hit ball from Garrett Richards. Huston Street (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth.

Mike Zunino drove in two runs for the Mariners, who have lost five of six.

CARDINALS 7, CUBS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Mark Reynolds doubled off the center-field wall to snap a tie in the sixth inning, and St. Louis rallied from three runs down to beat Chicago for its eighth straight victory.

Matt Carpenter tied the game with a three-run homer off Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks in the fifth and finished with four RBIs. Kolten Wong added an RBI in the seventh on an infield single, his third hit of the night.

Mitch Harris (1-0), a 29-year-old rookie and former Navy lieutenant, worked a scoreless sixth for his first career victory. Trevor Rosenthal earned his ninth save in 10 chances.

The Cardinals' major league-best 20-6 start is a franchise best since 1900.

Edwin Jackson (1-1) took the loss. Anthony Rizzo had three hits but grounded out with the bases loaded against Miguel Socolovich to end the eighth. The Cubs have lost a season-worst four straight.

DODGERS 8, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Zack Greinke allowed an unearned run and two hits in 7 2-3 innings to win his career-best 10th consecutive decision, and Justin Turner hit a three-run homer to lead Los Angeles over Milwaukee.

Greinke (5-0), who has not lost in 14 starts since Aug. 9 at Milwaukee, won for the fourth time this season following a Dodgers loss. He allowed two singles, striking out seven with one walk to improve to 16-2 at Miller Park, where he pitched for the Brewers in 2011 and half of 2012.

Turner connected in the sixth off Matt Garza (2-4). Adrian Gonzalez and Jimmy Rollins each added a two-run homer.

The Brewers, who had won a season-high three straight, lost for the first time under new manager Craig Counsell, who won his debut Monday night after replacing fired Ron Roenicke.

ATHLETICS 2, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jesse Chavez struck out seven and allowed one unearned run in 7 1-3 innings as Oakland ended Minnesota's five-game winning streak.

Chavez (1-2) gave up four hits and threw just 87 pitches. Billy Butler had two hits and an RBI for the Athletics. Tyler Clippard got five outs for his third save.

Trevor May (2-2) gave up two runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings.
