Your Opinion: Thoughts on amendments

Dear Editor:

In the May 1 edition your "Our Opinion" column discusses messes/unintended consequences of tinkering with constitutional amendments. On the proceeding page the "Quick Legislature" column notes "send voters a constitutional amendment to approve bonds to pay for construction of a new veteran's home."

This brings to mind interesting thoughts. Why would we need a constitutional amendment to take care of our veterans? Did we have an amendment for the bonding of the new Fulton hospital? Why did we Missourians tie our hands during the last constitutional reorganization requiring such micro management by citizens? Shouldn't we have confidence in our legislature to make such decisions?

Should the process be revisited to eliminate such need for constitutional amendments? Perhaps someone should take a look at the unused St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City there may be a veterans home an answer right there.
