Columbia files notice of appeal in fired officer case

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Columbia has announced plans to appeal a judge's ruling reversing the firing of a former police officer.

The Columbia Daily Tribune (http://bit.ly/1CwhUhZ) reports that a notice was filed this past week in the Missouri Court of Appeals Western District. At issue is a Cole County judge's January ruling in favor of Rob Sanders.

Sanders was fired in September 2011 for pushing an inmate in a holding cell at the Columbia Police Department. The inmate suffered a fractured vertebra and later reached a $250,000 settlement with the city.

After Sanders was acquitted in 2013 of third-degree assault, he sought to get his job back. He sued when City Manager Mike Matthes declined to reinstate him.

Sanders said the appeal was expected but that he and his attorney expect to prevail.
