Intruder dies of gunshot wounds near Versailles

A Versailles man was shot and killed after allegedly forcibly entering a neighboring home.

According to Morgan County Sheriff Jim Petty, deputies responded to a March 17 call of a possible home invasion and shots fired at a home on Dorsey Lane outside of Versailles. Upon arrival, deputies found a man lying outside the residence. Pronounced dead at the scene was Ronald Lee Salmons Jr., 45, of 13013 Dorsey Lane.

According to witnesses, Petty said Salmons was armed with a knife and forced his way into the neighboring residence, threatening the occupants inside.

Salmons was shot with a small caliber weapon and retreated outside of the residence where he collapsed.

Petty said the investigation is continuing.
