Missouri trio all go 2-0 at first day of championships

ST. LOUIS - The Missouri Tigers had three wrestlers go 2-0 Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Alan Waters at 125 pounds, Drake Houdashelt at 149 and J'Den Cox at 197 all remain in contention for individual titles in their respective weight classes for the Tigers.

Six other Missouri qualifiers remain in the tournament in the wrestlebacks after finishing 1-1 on Thursday.

Still alive for Missouri are Lavion Mayes at 141, Joey Lavallee at 157 Mikey England at 165, Johnny Eblen at 174, Willie Miklus at 184 and Devin Melton at 285.

Missouri, ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season national poll, is in fifth-place in the team standings after first day of the three-day event with 18 points.

Ohio State leads with 23, with Iowa sitting in second with 21. Oklahoma State is third with 19.5, while Penn State has 18.5.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. today. Today's second session, which will include the semifinals, will begin at 7 p.m.
