Your Opinion: School boards must be transparent

Dear Editor:

I just finished reading the late Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich's scathing 50-page report on the St. Joseph school district. In my opinion this report of the great number of violations of Missouri school laws should be used as a primer for all Missouri school boards to use to make sure they are in compliance with Missouri school laws.

Given the great number of violations going back more than 10 years involving millions of public education tax dollars, it makes one have cause to wonder. Are the St Joseph businessmen who make up the majority on the St. Joseph school board very, very stupid or dishonest?

The late State Auditor Schweich found evidence of the St. Joseph school board violating the open meeting law numerous times. The 7-0 votes of the school board with no or very little discussion led him to discover the lack of proper documentation and compliance with Missouri school laws.

My experience in Missouri tells me a number of school boards do not have the transparency for the public to view the actions and behavior of their local school board. It brings to my mind the quote that has been attributed to Mark Twain, "When God made idiots, he made school board members first, just for practice."
