Bus carrying college bowling team overturns in Indiana

HENRYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A bus carrying members of a college bowling team crashed Thursday morning along a southern Indiana highway while en route to a tournament in Tennessee, injuring 21 people, two of them seriously, officials said.

Indiana Tech spokesman Brian Engelhart said the bus was carrying 16 members of the Fort Wayne school's men and women's bowling teams, two coaches, their spouses and the driver to a tournament in Smyrna, Tennessee.

State Police Cpl. Carey Huls said the bus swerved to the left while traveling in Interstate 65's southbound lanes before swerving to the right and overturning in a grassy area along the highway. The accident happened about 10:30 a.m. just north of Henryville, about 20 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky, and left the bus on its side and surrounded by debris.

"We don't know the cause but the bus did drive off the left side of the roadway and crossed back over both lanes before going off the right side of the road. It went over the embankment and overturned, and then it rolled into some trees," Huls said.

University of Louisville Hospital spokesman Barbara Mackovic said 12 people injured in the crash were taken to the hospital and two were listed in serious condition and being evaluated for injuries that included possible pelvis fractures, wrist fractures and concussions. Most of those patients were airlifted to the hospital.

Mackovic said the hospital was treating the bus' 76-year-old driver, and looking into whether he had suffered a heart attack or stroke before the crash.

The driver is employed by Excursions Trailways, a Fort Wayne charter bus service the school has contracted with for many years, Engelhart said.

Mackovic said the hospital's remaining patients ranged from satisfactory to fair condition and most had suffered cuts and bruises. Seven of the patients were about 20 while the others are older, she said.

Huls said eight people who apparently suffered minor injuries were taken to the Scott Memorial Hospital and another passenger was taken to Clark Memorial Hospital.

Engelhart said the bowling team members are undergraduate students and the school was notifying their parents about the crash.
