Warm weather brings crime among outdoor activities

The spring-like weather Sunday allowed Mid-Missourians to get back outside to enjoy various activities. Unfortunately, it also led to more criminal activity.

Law enforcement officers were busy Sunday with several calls.

Around 3:08 a.m., Cole County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to the 8300 block of Sebo Lane, behind the Breaktime at Taos, for a disturbance.

Individuals were reported to be running from a residence in the area with knives and guns and an ambulance was called to treat an individual who suffered a broken jaw.

Sheriff's department reports show there was a party at a residence and a group of individuals was asked to leave when they showed up, which led to a skirmish.

There were 30 people detained, but only one person was arrested and that was for being a minor in possession of alcohol.

Throughout Sunday morning, Jefferson City police took several calls of car break-ins. The areas that were hardest hit were on East, North and West Circle Drives, Dix Road and Chicago Road.

In most cases, authorities said that the vehicles were unlocked.

With better weather, authorities are asking residents to remember to lock their vehicles because unlocked vehicles are prime examples of crimes of opportunity.

Authorities are also trying to find who set a tree on fire, which led to a natural cover fire Sunday evening.

The fire occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. in the 7400 block of Scott Road.

A description of an individual that was seen in the area was given to the Missouri Conservation Department, which is handling the investigation.
