Tipton girls fall in quarterfinals

MOBERLY, Mo. - The Northeast: Cairio Lady Bearcats put together the final run.

Northeast: Cairo scored 13 of the final 14 points of the game Saturday and defeated the Tipton Lady Cardinals 61-51 in Class 2 quarterfinal basketball action at Moberly Area Community College.

The Lady Bearcats, which led 43-37 after three quarters, held a 48-41 advantage with about six minutes to play. That's when the Lady Cardinals went on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 50-48. Alyson Brant scored the first five points of the spurt for Tipton, capped by a pair of free throws by Destiny Dowell with 4:30 remaining.

But the Lady Bearcats regained the lead on the ensuing possession with a 3-pointer and hit their free throws the rest of the way to pick up the 10-point victory.

Tipton jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led the entire first half. It was 15-8 after one quarter before buckets by Brandt and Dowell gave the Lady Cardinals their biggest lead of the game at 20-10 early in the second period. Tipton took a 28-22 lead into intermission.

Northeast: Cairo opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run to take its first lead at 31-30. The Lady Bearcats led by six points on three occasions in the third quarter, including their 43-37 advantage at the end of the period.

Dowell finished with 19 points for fifth-ranked Tipton, which ends its season at 28-2. Brandt chipped in with 10.

Jill Nelson scored 20 points to lead three Lady Bearcats in double figures. Mary Winkler added 18, while Monica Tracy totaled 10 for Northeast: Cairo (25-5).
