Art auction to benefit HALO foundation

Do you have some empty space on your walls? Or in your heart?

The HALO Foundation might have what you need: the perfect piece of art to decorate your life, and help young people in the process.

The foundation is hosting it 7th Annual Artreach Auction at 6:30 p.m. on March 6 in Jefferson City at Capital Mall. The event will feature cocktails, entertainment and dinner catered by Domenico's Italian Restaurant and Lounge.

With chapters in several American cities, Halo reaches many people, said Elle Benage, director of the Halo Learning Center in Jefferson City. HALO is a 10-year-old organization, and the Jefferson City center opened in 2012.

The foundation's motto is "Halo empowers youth in the greatest need."

Serving more than 1,000 young people around the globe, Halo helps provide free job empowerment skills to at-risk youth. The group also supports a transitional living program for teenage mothers struggling with homelessness. And HALO operates a orphanage, the Mengo Home in Kampala, Uganda, for 20 girls, ages three to 18.

"Every year we do an annual art auction. The money goes to support all three," Benage said.

She noted the Mengo Home girls painted some of the pieces to be auctioned; homeless teen mothers submitted other pieces for the sale.

"It's a cool way for the girls to feel they are supporting themselves," Benage said.

Other guest artists also have contributed pieces to the auction, she said.
