Jeffries returns to assist Crusaders

Sometimes you just have to be asked.

Mike Jeffries, the Hall of Fame coach who led Helias to 12 state wrestling championships, is getting back into the sport to assist new Crusaders head coach Matt Chinn on a limited basis.

"The administration asked me to come back," Jeffries said Monday. "I said OK, not on a full-time basis, but when they need help or suggestions, I will be there.

"Matt's one of my old boys and I feel like I can still coach a little bit and help a little bit."

Jeffries stepped down as Helias' wrestling coach after leading the Crusaders to the state title in 2003.

"Coaching is something you learn, I didn't walk into the room and go gangbusters right away," Jeffries said. "It takes time.

"Up until the time I retired, I believe I was still learning things."

Chinn was a member of that 2003 team and Jeffries believes he can help the first-year coach navigate through many of the early hurdles, like organizing a wrestling practice.

"I think that may be the toughest thing to do in any sport," Jeffries said. "I think I can help with that."

Chinn said he will be counting on Jeffries for his experience.

"I have a lot of faith in his ability to lead me through the process," Chinn said. "I know I need to learn and there's nobody better to teach me than Mike Jeffries."

Jeffries' exact duties aren't set in stone.

"Probably quail season will dictate how much I'm here," he said. "But I can't go (hunting) seven days a week, so I will be around."

Jeffries is excited to return in any capacity to the program he turned into a powerhouse.

"I still have that deep sense of loyalty I wear on my sleeve," he said.
