Friday's MLB Capsules

Games played on June 26, 2015

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Max Scherzer took a perfect game into the sixth inning in his bid to become the second pitcher in major league history to throw two consecutive no-hitters and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Friday night.

On a day Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg resigned, Scherzer stole the show.

Scherzer (9-5) retired the first 16 batters before Freddy Galvis doubled on a 1-1 pitch to the right-field wall. The Nationals right-hander allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings.

Scherzer tossed a no-hitter last Saturday against Pittsburgh, falling one strike shy of a perfect game before hitting Jose Tabata on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. He threw a one-hitter, striking out 16 in his previous start.

But he couldn't match Johnny Vander Meer, who threw two straight no-hitters for the Cincinnati Reds in June 1938.

CARDINALS 3, CUBS 2, 10 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Peter Bourjos scored the winning run from third on a throwing error by Mike Baxter in the 10th inning to lift St. Louis to a win over Chicago.

Bourjos began the inning with a double off Justin Grimm (1-2). Kolten Wong followed with a single off the second base bag and Matt Carpenter was walked to load the bases. Jhonny Peralta then hit a routine grounder to second base, where right fielder Baxter was positioned with the bases loaded and no one out to give the Cubs five infielders. He had plenty of time, but threw wildly to the plate.

Kevin Siegrist (2-0) got the win as St. Louis won its fourth in a row overall and seventh straight at home, where the Cardinals are a major-league best 27-7.

Chicago lost its third in a row after a four-game winning streak.

ROYALS 5, ATHLETICS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon homered to back Edinson Volquez, and Kansas City beat Oakland.

Unlike when these two teams met in April, when there were bench-clearing scuffles in all three games, there were no signs of lingering animosity. A few players from both clubs exchanged hugs and handshakes before the game, and both managers downplayed talk of any carry-over effect.

Instead the Royals rode the power of Morales and Gordon, and got another strong outing from Volquez.

Pitching against the A's for the first time since 2007, Volquez (8-4) gave up three hits and one run in seven innings. Volquez also reached 1,000 strikeouts for his career when he fanned Brett Lawrie in the sixth.

Sam Fuld had an RBI double for Oakland, which had its five-game win streak snapped.

ROCKIES 8, GIANTS 6

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit a pair of home runs and had four RBIs, Carlos Gonzalez matched his career high with five hits and Colorado held on to beat San Francisco.

Ben Paulsen had three hits and added a two-run single for the Rockies, who won their fifth in six games after losing eight of nine.

Chad Bettis (4-2) won his second start despite giving up his fourth home run in his past 17 1/3 innings. Bettis allowed three runs and six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Andrew Susac hit a home run for the Giants, who have lost three of their last five. Tim Hudson (5-7) took a shutout into the sixth inning, but Arenado's 21st homer ended it.

The Giants scored three times in the ninth against Tommy Kahnle to make things interesting.

YANKEES 3, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Young had a go-ahead, three-run homer among three hits in his hometown, lifting New York to a win over Houston.

Nathan Eovaldi (7-2), another Houston native, yielded five hits and two runs with six strikeouts in six innings to give him a career-high seven wins.

New York managed just three hits through the first six innings and trailed 2-0 before Carlos Beltran and Garrett Jones had back-to-back singles with one out in the seventh to chase Houston rookie starter Vince Velasquez.

He was replaced by Will Harris (4-1), who was greeted with Young's shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field to put the Yankees on top.

Young, who extended his season-long hitting-streak to nine games Friday, has nine homers, 33 RBIs and 14 multihit games in 25 career games at Minute Maid Park.

Carlos Correa had a run-scoring single in the third inning for Houston and an RBI single by Evan Gattis made it 2-0 in the sixth.

METS 2, REDS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Noah Syndergaard pitched eight sharp innings and light-hitting New York got exactly the help it needed when Johnny Cueto suddenly lost the strike zone, edging Cincinnati.

The Mets returned home from a 1-7 road trip in which they totaled 11 runs, and won despite getting just two hits. Curtis Granderson launched a leadoff homer into the second deck on Cueto's third pitch.

The Reds lost for the third time in nine games. They got to their New York hotel at 4:17 a.m. after a rain-delayed, 13-inning win at Pittsburgh.

It was 1-all in the fifth when Dilson Herrera tripled with two outs. Cueto (4-5), pitching with eight days' rest to give his aching right elbow some extra rest, hadn't walked a batter all game until walking Granderson, Eric Campbell and Lucas Duda to force home the go-ahead run.

DODGERS 7, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Brett Anderson tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed only one fly ball to help Los Angeles send Miami to its fifth straight loss.

Scott Van Slyke, filling in again for the injured Yasiel Puig, hit a two-run homer. Howie Kendrick tied a season high with four hits, and Jimmy Rollins had a two-run single.

Anderson (4-4) allowed the leadoff batter in the first inning to score but was otherwise unscathed and pitched seven innings. He had an RBI single, hiking his average this year to .100.

Two relievers completed a six-hitter. The Marlins' final 10 outs were strikeouts, and they struck out a season-high 16 times.

MARINERS 3, ANGELS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Taijuan Walker pitched seven sharp innings to win his fourth straight start, Robinson Cano homered and Nelson Cruz and Brad Miller had RBI doubles to lead Seattle to a victory over Los Angeles.

Walker (6-6) scattered seven hits, struck out six and walked none in his first career start against the Angels, stretching his streak of consecutive innings without allowing a walk to 21 1-3 spanning 87 batters. The only run against the 22-year-old right-hander came on Mike Trout's two-out homer in the first.

Fernando Rodney got three outs for his 15th save in 18 chances and his first since May 29. The right-hander, who set a franchise record last season with 48, got his first save opportunity since being demoted from the closer role.

RED SOX 4, RAYS 3, 10 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Mookie Betts doubled to extend his career-best hitting streak to 13 games and scored on Brock Holt's 10th-inning single to give Boston a victory over Tampa Bay.

Betts lifted a perfectly placed fly ball that dropped down the left field line to give him the Red Sox's longest hitting since Jacoby Ellsbury had a 19-game streak in 2013. Holt followed with his game-winning hit off Steve Geltz (1-3).

Alexi Ogando (2-0) came out of the bullpen in the ninth inning to get the win, retiring the only batter he faced to escape a jam with runners at second and third base. Koji Uehara pitched a perfect 10th for his 15th save.

Alejandro De Aza and Jackie Bradley, Jr. drove in second-inning runs to help Boston build a 3-1 lead against Alex Colome, who allowed four hits, walked five and struck out two over six innings.

BLUE JAYS 12, RANGERS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion hit his seventh career grand slam and a solo homer as Toronto handed slumping Texas its season-high sixth straight loss.

Russell Martin and Danny Valencia each hit solo homers for the Blue Jays, who improved to 17-7 in June and boosted their ML-leading run total to 417.

Encarnacion had three hits and narrowly missed a third home run in his final at-bat, flying out to the warning track in left against Rangers infielder Adam Rosales.

Mark Buehrle (8-4) pitched seven innings to win his third straight decision, improving to 2-0 with a 1.75 ERA in five June starts. Buehrle allowed two runs and five hits.

PIRATES 3, BRAVES 2, 10 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordy Mercer doubled home Andrew McCutchen with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Pittsburgh to a win over Atlanta.

McCutchen doubled off Jason Grilli (2-3) leading off the inning and three batters later, Mercer's third hit of the game smacked off the right-field wall as the Pirates won for just the second time in their last seven games.

Mark Melancon (1-1) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th for Pittsburgh as the Pirates' bullpen didn't allow a hit in three innings of relief. Pedro Alvarez added two RBIs for the Pirates.

Juan Uribe homered for Atlanta and Eddie Perez had two hits, but the Braves dropped their fourth straight game.

BREWERS 10, TWINS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Kyle Lohse pitched six effective innings and benefited from Milwaukee's six-run first inning to get his first win since May 16 as the Brewers beat Minnesota.

Lohse has beaten every team in the majors now after the 13-year veteran's first victory in three career starts against the club he broke into the majors with and spent six seasons.

Gerardo Parra, Aramis Ramirez and Scooter Gennett all homered to power the Brewers and help spoil the return of fan favorite Paul Molitor, who is in his first year as manager of the Twins.

Lohse (4-9) gave up homers to Brian Dozier and Trevor Plouffe, increasing his total to 19 allowed - second-most in the majors - in 16 starts.

Twins starter Trevor May (4-6) was charged with six runs - five earned - and six hits while getting just one out in the first inning.

ORIOLES 4, INDIANS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Davis singled in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, J.J. Hardy homered and had two RBIs and Baltimore beat Cleveland.

Jimmy Paredes had three hits and scored twice for the Orioles, who have won five of six to move a season-high five games over .500 (39-34).

Brandon Moss, Ryan Raburn and Carlos Santana hit solo homers for Cleveland, which wasted a 10-strikeout performance by Corey Kluber.

American League batting leader Jason Kipnis extended his career-best hitting streak to 20 games with an infield single in the Indians' fifth.

After Santana homered off Darren O'Day (5-0) in the eighth to tie it 3-3, the Orioles needed only two pitches to regain the lead in the bottom half. Paredes greeted Marc Rzepczynski (1-3) with a double and Davis followed with a single to right.

Zach Britton got three outs for his 22nd save.

PADRES 4, DIAMONBACKS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tyson Ross overcame control problems to combine on a two-hitter and Matt Kemp hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly, lifting San Diego to a win over Arizona.

Ross (5-7) allowed just two hits and struck out seven in six innings. But the right-hander tied his season high with five walks, including walking the bases loaded in the third that led to the Diamondbacks' two runs.

Kemp's fly in the sixth broke a 2-all tie. Cory Spangenberg scored just ahead of the throw by center fielder A.J. Pollock.

Ross combined with Brandon Maurer, Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel on the two-hitter. Kimbrel worked the ninth inning for his 19th save in 20 chances.

TIGERS 5, WHITE SOX 4

DETROIT (AP) - J.D. Martinez hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, and Joakim Soria worked out of a jam in the ninth to lift Detroit over Chicago.

The Tigers trailed 4-3 in the seventh, but Rajai Davis led off with a homer that inning, and Martinez went deep off Zach Duke (3-3) in the eighth.

Bruce Rondon (1-0) pitched a perfect top of the eighth for Detroit, earning his second major league win and first since 2013. Joakim Soria finished for his 17th save in 19 chances.

Soria allowed a leadoff double by Avisail Garcia in the ninth, and pinch-hitter J.B. Shuck hit a one-out single, putting men on first and third. But Carlos Sanchez popped up a bunt for the second out, and Adam Eaton grounded out to end it.
