Your Opinion: City officials challenged to ride buses

Dear Editor:

In his June 10 letter, Nelson Otto suggested several advantages the city bus service offers citizens. He said that city officials have failed to make these positive differences well known. This has perhaps resulted in a lack of new riders which could have prevented the need for a fare increase.

Maybe our city officials could benefit from undertaking a similar recent challenge the San Francisco officials accepted from a public transit advocacy group. The Bay City News Service reported on June 1 in an article titled "San Francisco City Officials Vow to Ride Public Transit for the Next 22 Days" that the mayor, city board and all full-time city employees are involved, riding the bus to/from work each day.

Becoming familiar with our transit system (in some way) also could increase attention given to it by our officials. More future riders for Jefferson City buses might result, providing the possible means of reducing the penalty of higher fares for the current fewer riders.
