Post 5 defeats Columbia in tourney opener

The American Legion Post 5 Senior baseball team defeated Columbia 6-2 in the Jefferson City Tournament opener Friday afternoon at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex.

Post 5 scored five of its six runs in the fifth frame, more than enough for Post 5 starting pitcher Sam Bowles. Bowles, a Southern Boone High School product, threw a three-hit, complete-game gem. He struck out 10 hitters and allowed just two runs on 76 pitches.

Hayden Strobel, a former Jefferson City High School player, led the Seniors at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort, including a double and a triple. The cleanup hitter picked up one RBI.

Post 5 and Fatima standout Logan Vogel drove in two runs with a double from the leadoff spot.

The Seniors (3-1) continue pool play at 10 a.m. today against Kirksville and at 3 p.m. against Fairview Heights (Ill.). Both games will be played at the Sports Complex.

In other action Friday, the Jefferson City summer team shut out Ballwin, 3-0. Other scores included Creve Coeur beating St. Charles, 6-0, and Fairview Heights notching a 6-4 win against Kirksville.

Jefferson City continues pool play tody at Westminister College, as it faces St. Charles at 10 a.m. and Creve Coeur at 3 p.m.

Pool play winners will continue play on Sunday.
