Napheesa Collier wasn't quite sure what to do. Or where to go.
Winning a gold medal and making the all-tournament team can do that, as the former Jefferson City Lady Jay accomplished both feats Sunday as a member of the United States U19 basketball team that defeated Russia 78-70 in Chekov, Russia.
"I was really shocked, and I think everyone could tell, because I was super confused, walking in circles when (a tournament official) was trying to tell me where to go," Collier said in a story on USA Basketball's website. "But I was really proud."
Collier finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals in the title game victory as the United States won its sixth straight title in the tournament. The eight-point final margin was the closest in the tournament for the United States, which finished 7-0 in the event.
"These are my favorite kind of games, so I am glad that it was a tough game," she said. "It feels amazing. All the hard work that we all put in showed tonight. It paid off."
After playing as a freshman at Jefferson City, Collier transferred to Incarnate Word Academy in St. Louis for her final three seasons, winning three straight Class 4 state titles.
She has signed to play at the University of Connecticut starting this season.
"This is going to help me a lot, because it has showed me how to play with college players and against them," Collier said. "It gives me a little bit of extra experience."
