Charges pending in shooting case

Two arrested face drug charges

Charges are pending after a Jefferson City man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest early Sunday during a shooting incident that occurred at an apartment complex on the west edge of the city.

Cole County sheriff's deputies were called to the 3700 block of Randall Drive around 1:45 a.m. Investigators recovered several shell casings at the scene. Shortly thereafter, they stopped a suspect vehicle on South Country Club Drive south of Missouri Boulevard.

Two people were subsequently taken into custody and charging documents are being sent to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office. The charges on the male subject are for first-degree assault, armed criminal action, receiving stolen property, and possession of marijuana (over 35 grams). A female was charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. Several firearms and drugs were recovered.

An ambulance transported the victim, whose name was not immediately available, to University Hospital, where he remains, post surgery, in serious condition. The investigation is continuing.

The Missouri Highway Patrol and the Jefferson City Police Department assisted at the scene, and the Columbia Police Department helped with information and assistance at University Hospital.

The Cole County Sheriff's Department plans to provide more information at a news conference today.
