OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) - Argentina's Emiliano Grillo shot a bogey-free 8-under 64 on Thursday to take the first-round lead in the Canadian Open.
The 22-year-old Grillo birdied three of the four par 5s at Glen Abbey. He earned a spot in the field Sunday with a top-10 finish in Alabama in the Barbasol Championship, just making it in when he birdied the final hole to tie for 10th.
Vaughan Taylor and Brian Harman were a stroke back. Two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton was at 66 along with Steve Wheatcroft, Tyrone Van Aswegen and Australian amateur Ryan Ruffels.
Jason Day, coming off a tie for fourth Monday in the British Open, opened with a 68.
Bubba Watson also was in the group at 68. His wife, Angie, is from Pickering, Ontario.
David Hearn and Adam Svensson were the top Canadians at 69.
Former Georgia Tech player Ollie Schniederjans had a 71 in his pro debut. He tied for 12th in the British Open. South Africa's Tim Clark, the winner last year at Royal Montreal, shot a 72.
SENIOR BRITISH OPEN
SUNNINGDALE, England (AP) - Defending champion Bernhard Langer had a 5-under 65 for a share of the first-round lead in the Senior British Open.
Langer was tied with Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, Americans Michael Allen, Bart Bryant, Marco Dawson, Jeff Sluman and Lee Janzen, and China's Lianwei Zhang.
Tom Watson opened with a 67 on Sunningdale's Old Course. The 65-year-old American missed the cut last week in St. Andrews in his final British Open start.
American Steve Jones and England's Barry Lane had doubles eagles on the par-5 first hole. Lane holed his 4-iron second from 218 yards on the 492-yard hole and, a couple of hours later, Jones did the same with a 6-iron from 179 yards. Jones had a 70, and Lane shot 68.
Fred Couples also opened with a 68. Jeff Maggert, the Regions Tradition and U.S. Senior Open winner this year, had a 71.
MEIJER LPGA CLASSIC
BELMONT, Mich. (AP) - Lizette Salas, Katherine Kirk and Dori Carter shared the first-round lead in the Meijer LPGA Classic at 7-under 64 at Blythefield Country Club.
Jaye Marie Green and rookie Wei-Ling Hsu were a shot back in the second-year tournament.
Michigan-born Kris Tamulis was at 66 along with Q Baek, Ilhee Lee and Jane Rah.
Top-ranked Inbee Park, who lost to Miram Lee in a playoff last year, had three front-nine bogeys in a 70. Chella Choi, the Marathon Classic winner Sunday in Sylvania, Ohio, opened with a 71.
Salas, Kirk, Carter and Green played in the morning in little wind and perfect scoring conditions. Hsu had the best round in the afternoon after the wind kicked up. Park and Choi also played in the afternoon.
Salas eagled the 478-yard, par-5 11th hole in her bogey-free round, hitting a 3-wood approach to 10 feet. She played the back nine in 5-under 30, closing with a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th. The former Southern California player won the 2014 Kingsmill Championship for her lone tour title.
EUROPEAN MASTERS
CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) - France's Gregory Havret made a hole-in-one on the 195-yard 13th and shot a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead in the European Masters.
Denmark's Lasse Jensen was a stroke back. England's Danny Willett of England, coming off a tie for sixth Monday in the British Open, topped the group at 65.
American Patrick Reed, playing in his first event in continental Europe, shot a 67. Fellow American and defending champion David Lipsky had a 66.
