Lake of the Ozarks is one of the most popular and visited lakes in the Midwest. Now the area's enthusiasts have a chance to name it one of the best recreational lakes in the nation.

The central Missouri lake is in the running for "Best Recreational Lake" in USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. Top competitors include West Okoboji Lake in Iowa, Big Bear Lake in California, Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada, and Lake Cumberland in Kentucky.

A panel of U.S. travel experts narrowed down more than 39.9 million acres of lakes and reservoirs in the country to 20 nominees with Lake of the Ozarks included.

Each week, USA Today 10Best is asking its readers to pick the 10Best in a single category, which ranges from food, lodging and destinations to travel gear and things to do, according to the poll's website.
