Press Box: Last week had lots to offer

Last week had lots to offer

The old saying goes that the Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away.

It's the same for the world of sports. Plenty of times, there are weeks where there's a lot of taking away, as not much of anything is going on.

Last week was not one of those weeks. It was definitely a case of sports giving, and giving, and giving.

Things started in earnest last Sunday, as the divisional round of the NFL playoffs had two major plotlines to discuss.

Dominating the day was the was-it-or-wasn't-it-a-catch play in the Dallas-Green Bay game. The Cowboys appeared to be on the doorstep of the go-ahead touchdown after a great catch by Dez Bryant. After video review, it was called an incomplete pass.

My only problem with it? Just the simple fact that it has to be a catch. If it's not, then every catch I've ever seen before has been a lie. Bryant hauled in the ball, took three steps and had the ball move slightly when it touched the ground as he was diving for the end zone.

But according to a poorly written rule, that movement means it's not a catch. That rule has to change, and fast.

The other big story that day came from the Colts-Broncos game, where Denver got beat and it became apparent Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has reached the end of a long and productive career. The onetime superstar looked like a mere mortal all game, making bad throws and failing to get his team into the end zone.

As someone who's been a longtime fan of Manning, it pained me to see it. But it's clear he needs to call it quits, as the gas tank is clearly on "E."

Then came Monday, and the first College Football Playoff championship game.

It was a tremendously fun game to watch, and a dominant effort by Ohio State produced a rout.

Much has been made about how the Buckeyes were down to their third-string quarterback due to injuries and they still won a national title, and that story will go down in the all-time lore of the game.

Then came Tuesday and another rout. While it may not have been fun for Missouri fans to watch the Tigers get dismantled 86-37 by the nation's No. 1 team, it was worth watching to see just how good the Kentucky Wildcats can be when they're fully engaged.

After a day to regroup on Wednesday, we came to Thursday and another Missouri team taking on a No. 1-ranked squad. This time it was the women's basketball team playing host to South Carolina.

Granted, the game wasn't always aesthetically pleasing, but it was hard-fought throughout, and Missouri had the ball in a one-possession game late in the second half before falling by 11 points.

Here's to more weeks like the last one.
