Seven to join Helias Hall of Fame

Helias Catholic High School will honor seven individuals inducted into the Helias Hall of Fame on Jan. 25 in the Helias Commons.

A special Mass begins at 4 p.m. for the inductees and their immediate families followed by a social hour at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. The program begins at 7 p.m.

The 2015 inductees are:

• Mary Lock Flowers, who was born in Jefferson City and is the daughter of Terence and Angeline Lock. She is married to J. Clinton Flowers. They have three children: Emma, Benjamin and William.

Flowers graduated from Helias Catholic, where she was involved in Pepettes, track, SSND community volunteers and was on the honor roll. She attended Lincoln University and earned a bachelor's of science degree in sociology/social work and a master's degree in education in counseling.

Her work history includes Gerbes grocery store and the Diocese of Jefferson City Christian Service Program in the Immaculate Conception Parish in Brookfield. She is currently a counselor at Helias Catholic High School.

Flowers is a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Jefferson City, where she served as a youth group leader and was on the Parish Council and education commission. She is also involved in Christ Renews His Parish and Why Catholic, is a prayer group leader and a hospitality minister, and has served on the Cole County Residential Services board, Lincoln University Nursing advisory board and Council for Drug Free Youth board.

Along with being a counselor at Helias Catholic High School, Flowers is certified as an ACT test administrator. She networked with DESE to address the special needs of Helias Catholic students, initiated DARE, partnered with Council for Drug Free Youth, and organizes college and career fairs along with parent financial aid workshops.

• Craig Husting, who was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is the son of Paul and Sue Husting. He was raised in Mesquite, Texas. He is married to Susan Fangman Husting, and they have four children: Max, Robert, Sam and Ben Husting.

He graduated from Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas, where he was active in basketball, track and student government. He earned a bachelor's of arts degree from Benedictine College and a master of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

His work history includes Ernst and Young's national cash-management consulting practice, deputy treasurer for the Johnson County, Kansas government and director of investments and deposit programs for the Missouri State treasurer's office. He is currently the chief investment officer of the Public School and Education Employee Retirement Systems of Missouri.

Husting is a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, has served as a school board member and is currently chairman of the athletic committee. He is a youth basketball coach and co-founder of the Knights basketball club, which serves as a feeder program to Helias basketball. He is also a member of the United Way of Central Missouri governing body, member of the Association for Investment Management and Research, chairman of the St. Benedict's Abbey investment committee, and past president of the Benedictine College Alumni Association.

His involvement with Helias Catholic includes past president and member of the Helias Catholic Advisory Council and past president of the Booster Club. He is currently the chairman of the Helias Catholic Investment Committee and member of the strategic planning committee.

• Everett A. Ralston, now deceased, who was born in Carthage and was the son of Lloyd and Rosalie Ralston. He was married to Sharon R. Narramore Ralston. They have six children: Kim Dickey (Don), Cathy, John (deceased), Cindy Kliethermes (Steve), Shannon Harris and Jason. They have 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Carthage High School and earned his master's degree in mathematics from Southwest Missouri State University and did post-graduate work at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Ralston's work history included teacher and coach at Helias Catholic, California High School, Osceola High School and the Springfield Public High School System. He also worked for the state of Missouri, A.L. Williams Financial Investment and was owner of Burger Inn.

He was a member of St. Peter Parish, where he was a lector and usher, provided transportation for senior citizens and participated in Perpetual Adoration. His community involvement included coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball.

His involvement with Helias Catholic included teaching mathematics for 20 years. He was the head basketball coach, assistant football coach and track coach, and he was instrumental in starting the wrestling program. Ralston loved all sports and was an avid Helias Catholic Crusader fan until the time of his death.

• Robert "Jack" Schnieders, who was born in Jefferson City, and is the son of Robert and Irma Schnieders. He is married to Shirley A. Lobb Schnieders. They have seven children: Mary Lynn Toalson (Mike), Jackie Berendzen, Chuck, Leslie Beckham (Rusty), Vicki Heermann (Tod), Connie Dohrman (John), Bob (Amy) and Cindy Perry (Matt). They have 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He graduated from St. Peter High School and was involved in football and school plays. He earned a bachelor's of science degree, master's in education degree from the University of Central Missouri and a specialist degree in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He served in the U.S. Navy.

Schnieders' work history includes teaching and coaching at Mountain View High School, Princeton High School and Helias Catholic High School. He was the superintendent of schools for the Blair Oaks School District and Sweet Springs School District.

He is a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Oak Grove and was instrumental in reopening a deserted Catholic church in Sweet Springs that became the mission of Marshall. He is active in the Knights of Columbus and also has been involved in the Lions Club, Missouri School Administrator Association and Missouri Teachers Association.

His involvement with Helias Catholic began when he was hired in 1956 to teach English and physical education, and coach the first football team and track. During the 10 years he coached at Helias, he held the nation's longest winning streak in football and was named National High School Coach of the Year.

• Debora "Debbie" Snyder, who was born in Jefferson City and is the daughter of Don and Delores Kopp. She is married to Michael Snyder. They have two children: Kaitlyn and Michael.

Snyder graduated from Jefferson City High School. She earned a bachelor's of science degree in accounting from Southwest Missouri State University and her certification in public accounting.

Her work history includes Arthur Andersen and Company and Evers and Company CPAs. She is currently a self-employed CPA.

Snyder is a member of St. Peter Parish, where she has served as a Eucharistic minister and on the parish finance committee and helps out as a substitute teacher and volunteer at school. She is also involved with United Way of Central Missouri, St. Mary's Health Center Foundation, Special Learning Center Foundation and the Missouri State Medical Association Alliance.

Her involvement with Helias Catholic High School includes current vice president of the Parents Club, member of the strategic planning committee, school advisory board and volunteer for the drug testing program. Her involvement with Helias Foundation includes six years on the board of directors and executive board and Foundation treasurer. She was also on the personnel committee and chair of the Foundation finance and investment committee.

• Edward J. "Ed" Twehous, who was born in Jefferson City and is the son of Frank and LaVerne Twehous. He is married to Linda Lincoln Twehous. They have three children: Katelyn, Kirk and Joseph (Marlene) and two grandchildren.

He graduated from Helias Catholic and was involved in cross country. During high school, he worked for Twehous Excavating Company and is currently a vice president and one of the owners of Twehous Excavating Company.

Twehous is a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Taos where he has chaired the Parish Council, parish finance committee, building and grounds committee, expansion and renovation committee and Capital Campaign committee. He also has served on the long-range planning committee, the strategic planning committee and the St. Francis Xavier school board. Twehous has coached youth softball, baseball, basketball and football. He is the past president and currently on the board of directors for the Associated General Contractors of Missouri, on the board of governors for the Associated General Contractors of America, has served on the Linn State Technical College advisory board, and is involved with the Mississippi Valley Society of Explosive Engineers and the International Society of Explosives Engineers.

His involvement with Helias Catholic High School includes advisory board member, finance committee, president search committee, head basketball coach search committee, building and grounds committee, long-range planning committee, strategic planning committee and strategic planning committee implementation committee. His involvement with the Helias Catholic Foundation includes foundation board, building and grounds committee, finance committee, personnel committee, Corporate Sponsors program committee and golf committee. He has also provided transportation for the girls and boys tennis teams.

• Daniel G. "Dan" Vanderfeltz, who was born in Jefferson City, and is the son of Leon and Rita M. Vanderfeltz. He is married to Joan Rackers-Vanderfeltz. They have one daughter, Laura.

He graduated from Helias Catholic High School and was involved in football and wrestling. He earned a bachelor's of science degree from Columbia College.

His work history includes Vanderfeltz Dairy Farm, Donnie Schnieders Excavating and Ludwig Construction. He is currently employed by Missouri American Water.

Vanderfeltz is a member of Immaculate Conception Parish where he has served as a hospitality minister, is in the Holy Name Society and helps as a Bell Tower barbecue cook. He has also served as school board president and is on the finance committee and is involved with Knights of Columbus 3rd degree, Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the American Cancer Society.

His involvement with Helias Catholic High School includes 30 years of participation and organization of the Booster Club barbecue and Helias work parties. He has also helped with the All Sports book and volunteered as facility coordinator for volleyball. He has volunteered for the Helias Catholic Foundation Hall of Fame, Kentucky Derby Party, Grandparents Day, Homecoming 5K race and the foundation golf tournament. Most recently, he took charge of replacing the vandalized Holy Mother of Mary statue his parents had donated to Helias. He secured an artist to create the new statue, raised money to cover the expense and supervised the installation.

If you would like to attend the hall of fame induction, contact the Helias Foundation at 573-635-3808 on or before Friday. Tickets are $25 per person, or you may purchase a table of eight for $200 or a table of 12 for $300.

Net proceeds from this event will be used to supplement the existing Helias Catholic tuition assistance program.

In an effort to recognize outstanding individuals whose lives have helped to establish Helias Catholic High School, the Helias High School Hall of Fame began in 2008. This event is held in Jefferson City in January to tie it in with the beginning of Catholic Schools Week.

New members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame each year. Individuals must have graduated at least 20 years prior to induction; demonstrated loyalty and service to Helias; distinguished him or herself in a chosen field; and have exhibited moral standards to the credit of the school.
