Police caution drivers to remember coming detours for road work

Jefferson City police are reminding motorists that major road work will taking place in the city and detours will be in place to get around the work.

In preparation for the new Lafayette Street Interchange, MoDOT is closing eastbound U.S. 50/63 at Madison Street at 7 p.m. Friday for the removal of the Chestnut Street and Jackson Street overpasses. It is anticipated that the highway will reopen by 6 a.m. Monday.

During the closure, traffic will be allowed to travel north and south on Broadway, Jefferson, and Madison streets from 50/63. Monroe Street will be open for northbound and southbound traffic and for traffic to travel westbound onto 50/63.

MoDOT has placed numerous electronic message boards notifying motorists of the closure as well as what are the available detour routes.

Authorities are reminding those who come into town going westbound from outside the east city limits of Jefferson City that the McCarty Street and Eastland Drive exits will be open and the Clark Avenue exit will be the last available option for westbound traffic to exit 50/63 and take the appropriate detour route.
