Boys Basketball: Kettering Fairmont wins Battle of Ohio, third in Classic

It was the strangest of games - a breakneck offensive show that often came to a skidding halt because of a whopping 50 fouls and 53 attempted free throws.

When it was all over, the Kettering (Ohio) Fairmont Firebirds emerged with an 87-76 win against the Upper Arlington (Ohio) Golden Bears in the third-place game of the Great 8 Classic.

It was the third-highest scoring game in the tournament's history, and the biggest total for one that finished in regulation. Only Hickman Mills' 94-83 triple-overtime win against Hickman in the 1997 fifth-place game and Springfield Parkview's 93-85 win against Marquette in double overtime in the 1996 seventh-place game topped Wednesday's game.

Fairmont trailed just once in the game - that at 4-2 just a minute in - and the Firebirds led 20-15 after one quarter, 44-31 at halftime and 62-44 heading to the final period.

Fairmont used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to take its biggest lead of the contest at 22 points, and the never dipped below double digits again. Darius Dunson dropped in 25 points to lead the Firebirds and also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Jimmy Bergman added 21 points for the winners and Kamron Drollet added 17.

Upper Arlington got a game-high 32 points from Onno Steger and Dane Goodwin added 20. Steger and Goodwin tied for the game high with nine rebounds apiece.
