Filing for city, school board offices opens Tuesday

Those interested in serving on the Jefferson City Council, the Jefferson City School Board or the Blair Oaks School Board can begin filing for office Tuesday.

The filing period for municipal elections begins Tuesday, and candidates will appear on the April 5 ballot.

Jefferson City Council

Five council seats will be on the ballot, with a majority of incumbents seeking re-election.

The city's filing period begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday and ends Jan. 20. Each council seat is for a two-year term. To run for City Council, candidates must be at least 21 years old at the time of election, be a U.S. citizen and be a qualified voter of the city. They also must have lived in the city for at least one year before the election and lived in the ward they wish to represent for six months before the election.

First Ward Councilman Rick Prather, 2nd Ward Councilman J. Rick Mihalevich, 4th Ward Councilman Glen Costales and 5th Ward Councilman Larry Henry all said they plan to file for re-election in December.

Third Ward Councilman Bob Scrivner is not eligible to run for re-election as he has served the full four, two-year terms council members are limited to. Erin Wiseman, an attorney with Brydon, Swearengen & England, already announced her intention to file for Scrivner's seat.

There is no filing fee to run for office; however, candidates must have endorsements from three people who live in the area the candidate wishes to represent, as well as a Department of Revenue Form 5120, which must be filed with the Missouri Department of Revenue before a candidate can file for office.

The endorsements must be signed either before a notary public or before the city clerk.

City Council members are paid $450 per month.

Jefferson City, Blair Oaks school boards

In April 2016, two seats each from the Blair Oaks and Jefferson City public school districts will be up for grabs.

From the JCPS school board, Dennis Nickelson and Doug Whitehead's two-year terms end this spring. While Nickelson does not intend to refile, Whitehead has yet to make an announcement on whether he will run again.

Lorelei Schwartz, an accountant with Schwartz & LeCure LLC, and Rich AuBuchon, of the AuBuchon Law Firm LLC, both have announced their intention to file for the open board seats.

At the Blair Oaks School Board, incumbents Greg Russell and John Weber have not announced whether they will refile and no other candidates have yet announced an intention to file.

Filing for both districts opens Tuesday and closes 5 p.m. Jan. 19; each seat is a two-year term.

Board candidates must be U.S. citizens and resident taxpayers of the district who have resided in Missouri for at least one year. They must be at least 24 years old, and cannot be a registered sex offender.

Candidates will file all required campaign disclosure reports for all previous elections as a candidate and will have paid all fees assessed by the Missouri Ethics Commission.
