Jefferson City's Tanner Irwin does battle with Eureka's Kyran Hagan on Friday at the Missouri Duals.

Last year, the Jefferson City Jays advanced to the title round of the Missouri Duals.

After the first day in this year's Duals, they look poised to return after rolling to a pair of Gold Division victories at Helias.

"I'm very proud of what we did," Jays coach Phil Cagle said.

But Cagle wasn't about to claim a potential spot in today's title matchup.

"It starts over again (this) morning with tough duals all day," he said. "There are no gimmes in this tournament, none."

Jefferson City opened with a 66-12 victory against Ozark, then after a bye, defeated Eureka 52-20.

Bonus points were big Friday for the Jays. Of 20 victories in contested matches, Jefferson City won 14 by fall and two more by technical fall.

"We've been stressing that because we have some weight classes without a lot of experience," Cagle said. "We need our experienced kids to wrestle for the extra points and they've been able to do that."

Going 2-0 with both wins by fall were Gavin DeWitt at 145 pounds, Tyler Bise at 152, Logan Moriarity at 170, Rashaun Woods at 182 and Jalen Martin at 195. Christian Mayberry was 2-0 with one win by fall and the other by technical fall, while Peter Kuster was 2-0 with one win by fall.

Tekoah Sage, who earlier this week was named to the Missouri Football Coaches Association's all-state football team as a defensive lineman for Jefferson City, went 2-0 as an undersized 220-pounder.

"He weighs 185 pounds and he's out there with guys at 220 as a fill-in for us," Cagle said. "He has courage."

Sage won his opening match 7-5 in overtime before taking a 6-0 decision.

"He has a lot of guts, we're so proud of him," Cagle said.

Going 1-1 for Jefferson City were Garrett Buttell at 106, Tanner Irwin at 132, Zack Hurley at 138 and Kane Carpenter at 285. Sam Martin was 0-2 at 113.

Irwin and Hurley both had a win by fall, while Carpenter's 13-9 win by decision against Eureka was the first of his career in just his fourth-ever match.

"That is such a huge step for him," Cagle said.

Neosho beat Jefferson City in last year's championship dual.

"We're just going to take it one step at a time (today)," Cagle said. "It's like climbing a ladder. If you take your eye off that next step, you're going to fall. We need to stay focused."

Action begins at 9 a.m. today. Jefferson City is scheduled to face Omaha (Neb.) Burke, Kirkwood, Waynesville and Battle to wrap up division action before the trophy matches.
