Helias girls capture tennis crown

Defeat Jefferson City for title

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Helias Lady Crusaders tennis team captured the title Saturday in the Southwest Missouri Invitational at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

Helias defeated Jefferson City 5-4 in the title match.

Singles results included: Ashley Dowden (H) defeated Athira Nabiar (JC) 6-4, 6-2; Abby Dowden (H) defeated Erica Dunn (JC) 6-1, 6-1; Megan Oliver (H) defeated Esther Ruboneka (JC) 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 tiebreaker; Susan Meyer (JC) defeated Liz Conley (H) 6-1, 7-5; Bailey Patrick (JC) defeated Grace Verslues (H) 6-2, 6-2; and Haley Watson (JC) defeated Emmi Theroff 6-1, 6-0.

Doubles results included: Dowden and Dowden defeated Nambiar and Meyer 8-2; Dunn and Ruboneka defeated Conley and Oliver 8-3; and Verslues and Theroff defeated Patrick and Watson 8-5.

The Lady Jays opened the event Friday with a pair of victories.

The Lady Jays opened with a 6-0 blanking of Branson.

Doubles winners were Nambiar and Meyer (8-3), Dunn and Ruboneka (8-1), and Patrick and Watson (8-0). The team dual match was clinched with singles wins by Nambiar (6-2, 6-0), Dunn (6-0, 6-1), and Watson (6-0, 6-0).

Ruboneka, Meyer, and Patrick were all leading in their matches when the match was clinched.

Ali Lewis and Erica Overfelt won an exhibition doubles match 8-1.

In the semifinals, Jefferson City topped host Glendale 7-2.

Doubles winners for the Lady Jays were Nambiar and Meyer (8-5) and Patrick and Watson (9-8 12-10 tiebreaker). Falling in doubles were Dunn & Ruboneka (5-8). Singles winners for the Lady Jays were Nambiar (6-2, 7-5), Dunn (6-4, 6-2); Meyer (7-5, 6-1), Patrick (6-4, 6-2), and Watson (6-2, 6-2). Falling in singles was Ruboneka (2-6,1-6).
