HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Archer pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a fifth-inning single by Colby Rasmus, and struck out 11 to lead the Tampa Bay Rays over the Houston Astros 1-0 Thursday night.

It was Archer's third career shutout and second against the Astros, having also blanked them in 2013.

Archer (11-9) retired the final 15 batters, fanning five. Rasmus led off the fifth with a groundball single and was the last runner for the AL West leaders.

Desmond Jennings got two hits for Tampa Bay and drove in the lone run with a single in the fourth off Collin McHugh (13-7).

TIGERS 4, RANGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Alfredo Simon threw a one-hitter in his first career complete game and Detroit topped Texas in a matchup of AL wild-card contenders.

The Rangers' only hit came with two outs in the fifth when Rougned Odor doubled.

Simon (11-7) walked two and struck out five. He threw 116 pitches, three short of his career high.

Martin Perez (1-3) took the loss for Texas, giving up three runs, six hits and three walks.

CUBS 7, BRAVES 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jake Arrieta pitched six scoreless innings for his major league-leading 15th win, and Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell homered to lead the Chicago Cubs over Atlanta.

Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak after winning nine straight and 15 of 16.

Arrieta (15-6) improved to 9-1 in his past 12 starts. The right-hander gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked one while lowering his ERA to 2.30.

Mike Foltynewicz (4-5) gave up seven runs in 4 2-3 innings.

INDIANS 3, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Josh Tomlin had his second impressive start since returning from shoulder surgery, Cody Allen worked out of his own jam in the ninth inning and Cleveland held off the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

Tomlin (1-1) only allowed Alex Rodriguez's 680th career home run leading off the fourth and a double to Chase Headley in seven deliberate innings.

Allen gave up an RBI single to Carlos Beltran, but retired Headley and Didi Gregorius with two runners on base for his 24th save.

Lonnie Chisenhall hit an RBI double, and Michael Brantley - still limited to designated hitter because of a sore shoulder - and Jose Ramirez had RBI singles off Ivan Nova (5-5).

ROYALS 4, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) - Wade Miley pitched into the eighth inning and Ryan Hanigan drove in two runs as Boston ended Kansas City's five-game winning streak.

Miley (10-9) helped the Red Sox improve to 5-2 under bench coach Torey Lovullo, who took over when manager John Farrell announced that is being treated for cancer. Mookie Betts, Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts had two hits apiece for Boston.

Junichi Tazawa pitched the ninth for his second save.

Danny Duffy (6-6) gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks in five innings.

PIRATES 4, GIANTS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Charlie Morton combined with two relievers on a six-hitter and Neil Walker hit a two-run homer, leading Pittsburgh over San Francisco.

Pittsburgh has won seven of eight.

Morton (8-4) scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out eight and walking two. He was pulled in the seventh inning with a four-run lead after the Giants loaded the bases with two outs.

Jared Hughes, who got Gregor Blanco to line out to end the seventh-inning threat, and Tony Watson completed the shutout.

Walker hit his 13th homer in the sixth off Jake Peavy (3-6).

ROCKIES 3, NATIONALS 2

DENVER (AP) - Yohan Flande pitched seven strong innings and singled twice, driving in a run and scoring one to lead Colorado over Washington.

Flande (3-1) allowed two runs and three hits to help the Rockies avoid a series sweep.

John Axford worked around a leadoff single by Bryce Harper and a walk for his 17th save.

Ben Paulsen singled in the seventh to drive in the tiebreaking run and Jose Reyes added three hits, including an RBI double.

Max Scherzer (11-10) fell to 0-3 in four career starts at Coors Field.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - A.J. Pollock drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning and Arizona rallied to send Cincinnati to its sixth straight loss.

Chris Owings homered and drove in two runs as Arizona overcome a 4-0 deficit.

David Hernandez (1-3) pitched a perfect seventh to get the win. Daniel Hudson left the bases loaded in the eighth and Brad Ziegler pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.

Burke Badenhop (1-3) took the loss.

MARLINS 9, PHILLIES 7

MIAMI (AP) - Martin Prado homered and drove in three runs, Marcell Ozuna had a two-run homer and Miami beat Philadelphia.

Adeiny Hechavarria had two hits to extend his career-best hitting streak to 13 games for the Marlins, who have won four of five while scoring at least six runs in all five games.

Brad Hand (3-3) allowed one run and four hits in six innings. A.J. Ramos closed for his 21st save in 26 chances.

Philadelphia starter Jerome Williams (4-9) got just five outs, allowing eight runs and eight hits.
