Commission moving forward on Ellis-Porter Pool renovations

The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission is moving forward with plans for a large scale renovation at Ellis-Porter Pool.

At the commission meeting Tuesday, staff presented cost estimates for pool renovations totaling $726,000. The renovation would seek to address several infrastructure issues, as well as add amenities, said J.J. Gates, park resources and forestry division director.

The project, which has yet to be bid out, includes taking out the existing wading pool and constructing a zero depth entry, which means the pool's shallow end would start at ground level and gradually deepen. It also includes replacing much of the pool's existing infrastructure and repainting, as well as relocating the existing frog slide.

Because of the project's estimated cost, several other options will be included as bid alternates, which the commission could choose to add to the project based off costs provided by contractors bidding on the project. The alternates include replacing the pool decks,

providing starting platform anchors at each end and adding new overhead lights and poles.

The commission has approximately $600,000 earmarked for the project in the draft 2016 budget, as well as another $200,000 in sales tax E funds.

The commission then approved a motion to direct staff to continue with the renovation project.

"This is exciting," said Commission President Denise Chapel.

In other business, the commission installed its newest member Bill Plank and recognized its outgoing member Joanne Scheperle, who had served on the commission for six years.
