BizBeat: Root Cellar now serving lunch

A lunch trip to downtown Jefferson City last week may have produced surprising new options, like the tomato basil gazpacho, roasted veggie polenta bowl or andouille sausage served at Root Cellar Cafe on Wednesday.

The 306 E. High St. grocery store, which opened in late May and specializes in locally grown produce and organic food products, debuted its commercial kitchen Aug. 5 with a menu of home-grown entrees, soup and salads.

Root Cellar's first of two locations opened in Columbia in 2001, but the Jefferson City cafe is the first in-store or carryout dining option at either store. Owners Chelsea and Jake Davis plan to open a similar commercial kitchen at the Columbia Root Cellar later in August.

"It's seasonal, so the menu will change from week to week," Chelsea Davis said.

The revolving lunch menu is available at Root Cellar's website, rootcellarmo.com, under the Root Cellar Cafe tab. Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options are available.

Root Cellar serves lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. The store is open for shopping from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays.
