Your Opinion: What are we teaching?

Dear Editor:

What is society teaching our children? The Clintons teach us about using interns, setting up a foundation to peddle power for money, destroying evidence and working the media like the Russians used TASS.

Activists seize on certain words to foment anger; their professional demonstrators stir up demonstrations and turn honest people into arsonists and thieves. Instead of learning from history, we bury it and blame today's generation for our ancestor's mistakes. Every culture, tribe and religion have fought for land expansion and defended themselves throughout every generation.

Athletes see the need to win at all costs, using drugs, deliberately hurting opponents, deflating footballs, and we buy into it and teach it to our children. "It is not enough to do your best, you must WIN or no one will like you. If you are not a Winner, you are nothing but a LOSER!" Don't be an also-run like your parent. Even though you have a 1 in 10,000,000 chance of becoming a professional, you must gear your life and dreams on the infinitesimal chance of success.

Watch us parents argue, curse and give lip service to God and country. Watch violent movies and television shows. See how they have affairs and mistreat their spouses and children. Break the laws; sell drugs and prostitute yourselves because you need to be rich. Wear indecent and disrespectful clothing to church and school and people will think you are sexy and cool.

"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for our country" is phooey. See what can we get from the government for free? The government will take care of us! "My mother and all her friends see the doctor every week so they can visit while they take their turns. Medicare will pay for it." "Let's do an MRI to check a broken rib even if it costs thousands of dollars. Insurance will pay."

We adults are the failures. We are not teaching our children that honesty and hard work are important, that education is more important than sports, that self-respect and mutual respect are equally important, how to really help the poor, to learn all the facts before forming an opinion, that failure lets us truly appreciate success, that only with God can our nation continue, that we should stand up and be proud of being an American!
