Our Opinion: Helias project expands opportunities

We join with supporters of Helias Catholic High School in welcoming plans for a major expansion at the school.

A June groundbreaking is planned for the three-story, $4.5 million expansion that will enhance arts and sciences, security, administration and religious life.

Specifically, the new wing will include six modern science labs, facilities for the dance team and choir, administrative offices with a secure entrance and a 250-seat chapel.

The expansion concept is hardly new. Helias President Stephen Jones described the plans as "the fruit of what's been floating around for seven years." He credited a core group of local Catholic donors for kick-starting the funding, now at $3.9 million.

Jones said the project marks an initial phase of future additions that call for construction of a performing arts building and outdoor athletic facilities.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the expansion is the emphasis on inclusion, both for students and the Catholic community.

In connection with the expansion, Jones said Helias will hire an "accommodations coordinator" to increase outreach to special-needs students who may need special educational services. He said counseling also will be enhanced.

And for the Catholic community, Jones said the facilities - including the chapel - will be available for reservations by groups.

"We want to do this for the benefit of the Catholic community," Jones said.

Added Ed Twehous, a coordinator of the capital campaign: "We want to make Helias a way of life for people."

Education is a community responsibility, and Helias Catholic High School has established itself as a cornerstone of academic and athletic excellence.

We applaud the school and its supporters for their commitment to building mind, body and spirit.
