Serve Jeff City slated for this Saturday

The fourth annual Serve Jeff City community service event begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Ellis-Porter Riverside Park. Volunteer registration is open now at www.ServeJeffCity.org for individuals and families, as well as groups.

The event will kick off with a pancake breakfast hosted by Sen. Mike Kehoe. The volunteers will then receive their assignments for the day.

Volunteers of all ages will provide labor, ideas and skilled trades to about 11 community and nonprofit projects in the city which include: helping nonprofit agencies like Council for Drug Free Youth, Jefferson City Day Care Center, Pathways Community Health, Salvation Army and Special Learning Center with tasks such as clean up and landscaping.

Ellis-Porter Riverside Park, Memorial Park and several neighborhood parks will receive beautification and landscaping in addition to planting and cleanup projects planned for Edgewood Greenway, Lincoln University and Wear's Creek.

Sponsors for Serve Jeff City include Allied Waste, Central Dairy, Fechtel Beverage, Hawthorn Bank, Hy-Vee, Jefferson City Parks and Recreation, Joe Machens Capital City, Lincoln University, Midwest Block and Brick and Scholastic, Inc.

Organizers for the event are the Jefferson City Area YMCA and United Way of Central Missouri.
