48 ticketed in local seat belt campaign

The Jefferson City Police Department (JCPD) participated with other Missouri law enforcement agencies in the statewide Click It or Ticket Enforcement Campaign on Tuesday in an effort to encourage motorists to wear seat belts.

During the enforcement effort, a total of 48 traffic citations were issued by JCPD officers, including eight speeding tickets, one DWI, one for following too closely, one for failing to stop for a red light, 10 for no seat belts, four child-restraint violations, one for driving while suspended, one for no operator's license and nine no-insurance violations.

Twelve other violators were cited for failure to register a motor vehicle or having expired registration, failure to produce a driver's license, and failure to properly attach the registration to the vehicle.

Despite evidence of the benefits of wearing a seat belt, authorities said nearly one in five Missouri motorists are not wearing a seat belt while driving and six out of 10 Missourians killed in traffic crashes are unbuckled.
