Lincoln men, women win titles at William Jewell

LIBERTY - The Lincoln men's and women's track and field teams won a combined 18 events in sweeping the Darrel Gourley Open on Sunday at William Jewell.

The women won 10 of the 11 events in which they competed, finishing third in the other, and the men won eight events. A total of 19 women's teams and 18 men's teams participated.

On the women's side, Yanique Ellington won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.62 and 24.06 seconds. Janae Johnson was the runner-up in each race - finishing in 11.71 and 24.25 seconds, respectively - and Keja Christie took third in the two races, coming in at 11.91 and 25.20 seconds. Kimberly Bailey finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.01 seconds) while Adewumi Ademuwagun placed eighth (13.08). Bailey also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.24.

Jhevere Hall and Monique Thompson swept the top two finishes in both the 800- and 1500-meter runs. Hall ran the 800 in 2:10.19 and Thompson finished in 2:10.89. In the 1500, Hall won with a time of 4:44.50 while Thompson timed in at 4:45.24.

Thompson later joined with Ebony Rose, Willomena Williams and Lovan Palmer to take the crown in the 4x400-meter relay at 3:46.10.

Lincoln also won the 4x100-meter relay, as the team of Johnson, Christie, Bailey and Nadia Harriott finished in 45.98. Ladonna Richards, meanwhile, swept the hurdle events, winning the 100-meter race in 13.57 seconds and the 400-meter race in 1:02.65. Harriott finished third in both hurdle events, posting times of 14.57 seconds and 1:06.19, respectively, while Rose was the fourth-place finisher in the 400 hurdles (1:07.32).

Williams had Lincoln's other track victory of the day, winning the 400-meter dash in 55.85. Rose finished third in that race in 57.83.

The Blue Tigers' final win came in the triple jump, as Jonelle Campbell was victorious with a mark of 38-71/2. In the long jump, Ademuwagun led Lincoln with a third-place finish of 17-8. Naomi Bryant finished sixth in the triple jump at 33-31/4.

Also, Akeeba Rose finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:59.25).

The women tallied 189 total points to finish ahead of the host school, which was second with 110. Baker was third with 96.

Also at the meet, William Woods' Madelyn Scrivner (Eldon High School) was fourth in the shot put (39-1/2), sixth in the discus (107-5) and sixth in the hammer throw (133-3), while teammate Grace Young (Russellville High School) was fourth in the 1,500-meter run (4:51.19).

Missouri S&T's Katlyn Meier (Vienna High School) was fifth in the 200-meter dash (25.36) and was part of the Miners' 4x100-meter relay team that finished third (49.10).

On the men's side, Lincoln's Miguel Barton was a triple winner, taking the 400-meter dash in 47.62 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 21.21 seconds and teaming with Wesley Best, Jakiel David and Roger Blake to win the 4x100-meter relay in 41.44 seconds.

Best was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 21.29 seconds. Best also won the 100-meter dash in 10.39 seconds, while David placed second in 10.62.

The Blue Tigers took the 4x400-meter relay, as Blake, Jeromia Riley, Winston Edwards and Alva Henry posted a time of 3:15.72. Riley also took the crown in the 800-meter run in 1:53.10.

Lincoln's other victories came in the field events, with Sedeekie Edie winning the long jump at 23-71/2 and Owen Smith taking the crown in the triple jump with a mark of 46-51/2. Edie finished third in the triple jump (45-111/4) while Orneldo Thomas claimed third in the long jump (22-113/4).

Edwards was also the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 53.54 seconds. Darran Hunter placed third in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles (14.55 and 54.53 seconds, respectively). Henry came in sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.43 seconds.

Hampton Mayson took fifth in the discus with a distance of 144-2.

The men finished with 135 points to win, as Missouri S&T was second with 116 and Johnson County Community College was third with 87.

John Karsten (Blair Oaks High School) helped Missouri S&T to its finish by winning the shot put (48-91/2) and finishing second in both the discus (148-3) and hammer throw (176-4).

Two other area athletes were winners, as Central Methodist's Dilan Simmons (Versailles High School) took first in the discus with a heave of 153-11 and William Woods' Kaleb Wilson (Linn High School) won the 1,500-meter run (4:10.23).

Competing unattached, Will Fife (Helias High School) was third in the discus (147-4) and fourth in the shot put (47-8).

Both the Lincoln teams return to action Thursday through Saturday at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan.
