Your Opinion: Flagpole request denied

Dear Editor:

We live at the Villas of Duane Swift in Jefferson City. It is governed by a homeowners association of sorts. I say this because it is not governed by a two-thirds majority of the association.

Given that it is ruled by by-laws my husband requested of the architectural committee, consisting of the owner/builder, that he be allowed to erect a telescoping pole on which to place our American flag. That request was denied because it would not be "aesthetically pleasing to our neighborhood."

In the direction this country is headed, I should not be surprised.

My husband proudly served in the military for 40 years. This is how he is repaid.

I am sorry to say a lighted flagpole with the American flag will not be flown in our yard. So goes the old adage - It is always better to ask forgiveness, rather than permission.
