Council approves contract for key, road improvements

Residents may soon notice additional construction near Stadium Boulevard, Christy Drive and Monroe Street.

At its meeting Monday, the Jefferson City Council approved a contract with Sam Gaines Construction for improvements on Stadium Boulevard, Christy Drive and Monroe Street. The council approved a suspension of the rules, allowing the bill to be both introduced and approved in the same meeting, as city staff is hoping to start the project as quickly as possible to try and finish it while school is out for the summer.

The joint city and county project is aimed at easing traffic congestion at U.S. 54 and Stadium Boulevard as the nearby Capital Region Medical Center expands its campus.

The project will widen Monroe Street to allow for two-way traffic between Stadium Boulevard and Woodlawn Avenue, and install a traffic signal at the intersection of Stadium Boulevard and Monroe Street. The project also will widen and reduce the curve of Stadium Boulevard between Christy Drive and Monroe Street, as well as widen Christy Drive.

The project is estimated to cost roughly $1.9 million, with the city and county each responsible for 50 percent of the funding. On Monday morning, the Cole County Commission "gave concurrence" to have the council award the bid to Sam Gaines Construction after reviewing financial matters with both city and county staff.
